When thinking about a mirage in the desert, the first thing that would pop into your mind would probably be palm trees, a lake and a bit of grass all around the dewpond.


What if all those people thinking they were hallucinating because of the heat and dehydration were not really hallucinating?

What if all those dream-like oases actually existed and the people wandering in the deserts were not having a mirage?

I can actually ensure you that some—not all—of those individuals probably did not realise that what they were looking at was an actual patch of greenery in the middle of nowhere, and not an illusion.

How could I be so sure about this? Well take a look at the following photos and you will understand why.


Indeed, The Golden Scope found some stunning oases hidden in the most hostile and isolated deserts of the world. Who would have thought that in the middle of the Gobi Desert in China there would be a crystal clear lake surrounded by bushes!


Before starting to tell you about the world’s most beautiful oases, it is first important to understand what an oasis is. According to the National Geographic,

An oasis is an area made fertile by a source of freshwater in an otherwise dry and arid region.

Ein Gedi Oasis, Dead Sea, Israel
This is an oasis in Israel situated west of the Dead Sea near Masada and the Qumran Caves. Ein Gedi was declared natural reserve in 1971 and it includes two spring-fed streams with flowing water year-round.

Crescent Lake Oasis, Gobi Desert, China
Located 6 km south of the city of Dunhuang in Gansu Province, the Desert lake Oasis is actually named Yueyaquan. When there is it possible to go on camel rides all around the oasis as well as admiring the peaceful surroundings.

Wadi Bani Khalid, Oman
This oasis can be reached by car from the city of Muscat, which is 203km away from Wadi Bani Khalid. Featuring a water stream that flows throughout the year, this hidden gem is completely framed by greenery.

Desert Lake Oasis in Maranhao, Brazil
Surrounded by a sea of sand, the Desert Lake Oasis is part of the Maranhão National Park in Brazil. The closest village to the oasis is “only” four hours walk on the sand. However, despite the isolation, a community actually lives in there.
